Before there was Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter, people used to get these "web-hosting account" thingies and use Frontpage Express or HTML code in notepad to create their own presence on the world wide web. This site is an homage to those heady days.. though I promise you, there are no pictures of cats on this site.
At least, not yet.
The year was 1996. Netscape was the browser of choice, mostly
because IE was still absolutely horrid. Google had not even been imagined yet. Yahoo
held the majority market share of web search, and there were companies
like Lycos, Excite, and Hotbot rounding out the top few engines.
Most of my time was spent on IRC (Undernet #chat for those in the know)
via a Unix shell account through a company called Teclink (long since
defunct) in Jackson, MS. My music of choice at the time was a
mixture of EDM, Tool's Aenima, Nirvana's Incesticide, and Weezer's Blue
Album. There were no MP3s, media players, or file-sharing
programs. You still had to buy CDs, or bootleg cassette tapes
from your friends' music collections. Nobody had blogs.
Well, they did, but they weren't called blogs then, and people didn't
feel the need to update them nearly as often as they do now, nor provide the personal
details that they often feel like sharing. Mostly they just posted
pictures of their cats.
My hard drive was 120MB, and it was considered large by those
standards. I was still using DOS / Windows 3.1 on a 486 I built from
spare parts given to me by a friend.
Anyhow, I could reminisce for hours about what the internet was like
back then.. but I will get to the point of the site. I just had
this webhost sitting up here doing nothing except providing a nice archive of self-produced music, and figured it was about
time I used it for something more. So there you go.
Check out my music page for more random silliness.
